Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. He is one of the most well-known and influential anti-apartheid activists. In 1964, Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island, off Cape Town, South Africa. This was because he led the liberation movement against apartheid and took a stand for the human right to live freely. The prisoners on Robben Island were never referred to by their names, but rather by numbers and year of imprisonment. Hence, Nelson Mandela is associated with the number 46664.
His release from prison in 1990 fed political debates in the country and contributed to South Africa’s transition towards a multi-racial democracy. After being released from prison, Mandela continued addressing racial issues in South Africa. His efforts resulted in him being elected as South Africa’s president in 1994. He remained in office until 1999. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 2007, Mandela formed the “Elders”, an independent group of global leaders who offer their influence and experience to support peace building, help address major human suffering causes and promote shared interests of humanity.
The first Mandela Day was launched in New York on 18 July 2009. However, the United Nation only adopted a resolution to declare the day “Nelson Mandela International Day” on 10 November 2009. Mandela Day is a universal movement for good and aims at inspiring people to change the world for the better. In doing so, we can embark on a universal movement for good. Mandela Day wants to empower communities everywhere. There is nothing more fitting than to celebrate Mr Mandela’s birthday with a day devoted to his contribution to peace through his active involvement in resolving conflicts, promoting human rights, international democracy and reconciliation, and in addressing racial issues.
The intention behind Mandela Day is quiet simple. Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. Nelson Mandela Day asks that you give 67 minutes of your time supporting your chosen charity or serving your local community. People and organisations around the world are taking part in activities to promote democracy, equality and diversity. SuperGroup will be participating in this great initiative through their various dealerships who want to contribute toward having a positive effect on others around. We hope to inspire people to embrace the values that Mandela shared.
Make every day a Mandela day.
